A WRITING RETREAT IN SPAIN
Announcing a unique opportunity for travelers, writers, teachers,
and beyond!

Saturday May 20 – Saturday, May 27, 2023

Inspired by our experiences as writers, educators, travelers and Bay Area Writing Project Teacher Consultants, we (Greta Vollmer and Meredith Pike-Baky) have designed a seven-day work vacation that incorporates writing activities, guided feedback and curated tours of historical and cultural places in and around Girona, a stunning medieval city in northeast Spain. Whether you’re starting out as a writer or have several pieces to polish, the workshop will help you broaden your repertoire and fine-tune your writing in a community of supportive partners.
Accommodations are in a modern wing of the Monestir de Sant Daniel. The hostatgeria has been in operation since 1100 and continues to be an active convent, where four nuns currently reside. The cost for the retreat is $1400 per person and includes the writing classes, 7 nights’ accommodation (single rooms), all meals and morning snacks. A welcome reception and a farewell dinner at a local restaurant are also included. Travel to Girona, local travel costs, any entrance fees or additional activities are not included in this fee. Please visit the website for more information and photos of the accommodations: http://www.santdaniel.com/ca/hostatgeria/

I currently divide my time between Berkeley and Girona, where I write, sketch and study Catalan. In addition to being a retired professor of Applied Linguistics/English, I have coached writers and directed Writing Project Institutes for a number of years, serving as the Bay Area Writing Project’s Director from 2012-2015. I am passionate about in-depth travel adventures and language learning, and look forward to sharing my knowledge of and enthusiasm for Catalonia with you.

I have been a teacher trainer and writer for many years having worked with students and teachers on issues of literacy in the U.S. and overseas. I teach an annual Summer Writing Workshop for Teachers in the Bay Area and have been an English Language Specialist in Rwanda, Congo-Brazzaville, China and Burundi. What a privilege it’s been to combine travel and teaching. Our Girona experience promises lots of wonderful discoveries and inspired writing.
